Week 8: Nano-Tech + Art
100,000 Nanometers thick. Thats how many nanometers are in one sheet of paper. Nano Technology manipulates the seen world, but remains unseen. Nanotechnology, although a recent science, has had profound applications in today's world already that comes in many different areas of art.
One area of nanotechnology that really helped me understand this weeks concept was through its benefits. Nanotechnology works in many beneficial ways such as increasing the electricity generated by windmills. It does this through the use of Epoxy. Epoxy contains carbon nanotubes that is being used to make windmill blades. The resulting blades are stronger and lower weight and therefore the amount of electricity generated by each windmill is greater. Nanotechnology has not only found ways to better the environment, but it has also found itself in medicine advancement.
There are Nano Particles that are engineered so that they are attracted to diseased cells, which allows direct treatment of those cells. How amazing is that! This technique reduces damage to healthy cells in the body and allows for earlier detection of disease. An area that this could potentially be really prominent in is in chemotherapy. These are just a couple of areas where technology has benefited us.
However, it is important to note that since nanotechnology is new, it is hard to really say what these long term effects could have. This is a reason that many are rather eerie of this science and its applicatios.
