Week 2: Math + Art
When I envision art, I automatically think of paintings or sculptures, but I never really question how that art piece came to be. This week I learned how math and art influence each other. Professor Vesna emphasized this concept heavily in her lecture video while touching on concepts like the golden ratio. Even though I could follow her spoken concept, I think what really engrained this concept in my head was visuals of math and art working together shown by many of the artists I will discuss in the following.
Art, created by mathematical positioning.
Nathan Selikoff’s exhibition of the sound activated clock really helped me see math and art literally working together. The clock's hands reflecting voice waves as people made noise was extremely fascinating to me and gave that visual representation that connected math and art. Another art piece that really got me to consider maths influence on art was the swinging pendulum. I've seen pendulums before, but it never really occurred to me as to how they always swung in unison. The kinetics behind this project was inspiring, especially considering how different
viewpoints of the pendulum offered a different perspective of the art piece.

To me, painting has always been between a brush and a canvas. However, Charles Csuri brought up an interesting perspective that questioned how we consider art. Using a computer to paint doesn't make it any less artistic than using a paint brush. In order for him to paint on the computer, he used coded systems to produce his art. This made me consider how we as people tend to view the surface level of creations because that's what we are automatically drawn to, not the mechanics behind it.
Using a computer to create art.
Overall, what I took from all of this new insight and knowledge is that in math and art the composer or calculator recognize a pattern. Both disciplines utilize patterns to communicate, a concept I found in an article by Deborah Kris. This is why I believe that solving an equation or painting a photo requires us to use a system of analytics to compose and create something that both visually and conceptually represents math and art in its most basic form.

I particularly resonate with the commentary in this piece, especially the concept that the composer or the artists recognize the patterns that are inherent in the formation of mathematics compositions. The more artists and math-oriented careers are intermingled, the better everyone is.
